New enterprises keep adding to the unfolding tapestry of the Gordon Square Arts District. And it’s especially cool that the latest opening brings something sweet to the mix.

Sweet Moses Soda Fountain & Treat Shop, 6800 Detroit Ave., Cleveland, is holding its grand opening Saturday. And it is just the right addition to Gordon Square. Vanilla-colored walls hung with vintage posters and oversize postcards, handsomely restored booths and dozens of other old-time touches — including a vintage root-beer barrel and a grand 1940s-era Bastion-Blessings soda fountain fronted by a 16-foot marble counter — lend a welcoming throwback feeling to the place.

“I really wanted to create an experience here, and I knew the feeling I wanted guests to take away — a multigenerational experience,” says Jeff Moreau, who operates Sweet Moses with his wife, Ellen.

“I want people to walk in here and feel glad that it’s in the neighborhood, happy that it’s in the city,” says Moreau, a veteran of the advertising business who wanted to try his hand at something different. “I want my 83-year-old mother to walk in with her friends and say ‘Wow, this reminds me of my childhood,’ but also have a 20-year-old appreciate the fact that it’s cool, it’s not a chain and it’s not in a ‘lifestyle center.’ It’s something that a lot of them will be experiencing for the first time.”

With treats like these, there should be plenty of smiles and memories in the making. House-made classic flavors of ice cream, cookies, brownies and chocolates — barks, fudges and filled “cups” — made with Belgian dark, milk and white chocolate are among the treats. By the way, don’t miss the great white cheddar popcorn and caramel corn.

Those confections and others were showcased during a pre-opening party this past weekend. Guests were invited to sample traditional fountain fare that shares names with area landmarks, such as the Gordon Square (a large homemade brownie topped with house-made Bananas Foster ice cream, hot fudge and warm homemade real-butter caramel), the Shoreway Sundae (hot fudge-topped coffee ice cream showered with almonds and toffee pieces) and the $25 Terminal Tower (a scoop of each of Sweet Moses’ 10 classic flavors, draped in a landslide of marshmallow cream, hot fudge, warm caramel, pecans, candy sprinkles and cherries).

The Moreaus intend to eventually maintain late closing hours, making the shop a stop for after-theatergoers and others who “want something sweet but don’t want to eat it out of a cup in a parking lot,” Jeff says. If you want a sneak peek before Saturday, the shop will be open noon to 9 p.m. through Thursday, and noon to 5 p.m. Friday. 216-651-2202.

Cleveland Orchestra, Happy Dog partner for audience exchange

November 11th, 2010 § 0

By Zachary Lewis, The Plain Dealer

When Happy Dog co-owner Sean Watterson agreed to begin hosting musicians from the Cleveland Orchestra, his aim wasn’t just to drum up new business.

No, his actual goal was far more ambitious: to unite University Circle and Gordon Square, two of Northeast Ohio’s most vibrant arts districts.

“The more we can do to connect these institutions, the better,” he told The Plain Dealer.

Well, a major first step in that direction is now in the works, with an audience-exchange program called “Gordon Square Goes to the Orchestra,” linking Severance Hall and Happy Dog.

The event centers on the orchestra’s Dec. 3 “Fridays@7″ concert, featuring guest conductor Pinchas Steinberg performing Mahler’s “Titan” Symphony No. 1 and a post-concert show by the New York Gypsy All-Stars Band.

Through a special offer by the orchestra, floor-level tickets to the “Fridays@7″ concert are available for $25. Use promo code 8795 at 216-231-1111 or clevelandorchestra.com.

Before the performance, however, at 6 p.m., the orchestra will offer complimentary bus service to Severance Hall from Happy Dog, 5801 Detroit Ave., Cleveland. Afterward, the service will return patrons to Happy Dog for a free (for orchestra patrons) indie rock performance at 10 p.m. by Bill Fox and Tadpoles.

Finally, those who started off their evening in University Circle will be able to ride the bus back to Severance Hall, departing Happy Dog at midnight. For more information, contact the orchestra, or call Happy Dog at 216-651-9474.

WKYC Article: Cleveland: Governor praises Gordon Square Arts District economic investment

Kim  WendelUpdated: 5/22/2010 7:51:02 AM  Posted: 5/21/2010 3:23:46 PM

CLEVELAND — Governor Ted Strickland touted the Gordon Square Arts District when he addressed about 200 business and civic leaders gathered for a leadership breakfast Friday morning at the recently renovated Capitol Theatre.

Strickland said the District is a great example of how to create jobs and investment in a city neighborhood.

“You are creating long-term economic growth, and new jobs,”  said Strickland. “In the short term, you are creating construction jobs. In fact, dollar for dollar, an investment in a building rehabilitation project creates more jobs than an investment even in a highway construction project.”

Team NEO, an economic clearinghouse for the 16 counties in Ohio’s northeast corner, has tracked the economic impact of the arts district as a dramatic $317 million in Cleveland alone through 2013.

In comparison, the five major projects of the arts district — three theatres, a stylish streetscape and added parking — represent a total investment of just $30 million.

The state of Ohio has invested $1.9 million in capital funds and provided leveraging for $4.4 million in federal tax credits.

Other funds have come from a variety of sources, including the city of Cleveland, Cuyahoga County, foundations and private contributions.

“Our urban agenda in Ohio is clear,” said Strickland. “We must build upon the great resources already existing within our cities, we must revitalize forgotten treasures and we must celebrate the cultural and economic vitality that pulses through our cities.”

“The Gordon Square Arts District serves as an example for cities across the nation of how to uncover a neighborhood’s assets, invest in them and watch it take off and deliver more than a tenfold return,” said Christopher M. Connor, chairman and CEO of Sherwin-Williams.

“The non-profits and civic leadership behind its revival have cleverly leveraged the arts into a newly revived, productive community.”

Connor is also chair of Team NEO.

The Gordon Square Arts District, a collaborative work of three nonprofits — the Detroit Shoreway Community Development Organization, Cleveland Public Theatre and the Near West Theatre — is seen as a national model of how the arts can stimulate economic development.

The Team NEO study did not measure additional real estate and development activity, which is estimated by the Gordon Square Arts District and Detroit Shoreway Community Development Organization at an additional $400 million or more.

Most of the restaurants, shops, galleries and other businesses are flourishing, with 33 new ones opening since 2006.

Housing ranging from live-work spaces for artists to spacious condominiums for successful entrepreneurs is in demand.

Additional components include streetscape improvements on Detroit Avenue between West 58th and West 73rd streets and new parking to accommodate residents and visitors.

The theatres provide unique entertainment to attract audiences from throughout the region.

WTAM 1100 Article: Leaders tout Gordon Square

Project will add jobs and millions of dollars to the economy.
Friday, May 21, 2010

(Cleveland) – Local leaders met at the renovated Capital Theatre at West 65th and Detroit to talk about the success of the Gordon Square Arts District.

The $30 million revitalization program is expected to pump $317 million into the economy of the Detroit-Shoreway neighborhood by 2017. Backers say the Gordon Square project has created 950 permanent jobs, plus 310 construction jobs.

Gordon Square Co-Chairman Dick Pogue says fundraising continues. Governor Strickland says the project is an amazing success. Chris Conner of Sherwin-Williams and team NEO agrees.

Plans are now underway to link Gordon Square to Lake Erie allowing residents to walk from the arts district to the shoreline.
